Without well drilling equipment there would be no oil, no gas, no cars, no economy.
Well drilling equipment can’t go to work until the oil is found. That’s generally the job of a geologist. Actually they only find locations where oil is likely to be found. Oil is found in a number of ways. The oldest method is to observe surface conditions. It’s still done, but technology such as satellites help with the task. Seismic tools that send shock waves through the rock are also used. They then interpret the reflections to determine areas likely to contain oil. Gravity meters detect slight changes in gravity caused by flowing oil, so they’re also used to find oil. The final step is marking a likely oil location with a GPS device. Despite all this technology they’re right in identifying an oil field only about 10% of the time.
Once oil is found the site must be prepped to accommodate well drilling equipment. It’s a little bit like preparing food before using the pan and stove to cook it. To ensure the environment is preserved impact studies are conducted. Legal concerns like rights to drilling are handled. Then the well site can be made ready for drilling.
Well drilling equipment sits on the sidelines while the area is made ready. Access roads are built, and then the area is cleared and leveled for easy access. Water must be drilled or piped onto the site. Finally they prepare a plastic lined pit where the rock, mud and other debris will be deposited. For some sites this refuse must be trucked away and disposed of somewhere else.
They’re almost ready for well drilling equipment. Now holes are dug for the rig. In addition a rectangular put is dug. That’s where the rig and other equipment go to work. Now the site is ready for drilling.

Drilling for oil is a complex process. Just getting ready to begin takes a lot of steps. Finally, well drilling equipment can do its work.
